Irlam 2 Squires Gate 0
GATE’S much-anticipated Vodkat Challenge Cup quarter-final against AFC Blackpool won’t take place after the premier division side were eliminated by a team 25 places below them in the league.
They pushed their first division hosts back in the early stages but Irlam gradually put Gate on the back-foot, forcing keeper Neil Beesley into two spectacular saves.
Gate had chances in the final 15 minutes of the half, the best of them when Scott Harries collected a clearance 30 yards out and beat two defenders before seeing his shot saved.
The pace of Andy Harvie and Gaz Lewis posed a threat but the Irlam defence was quick to clear any danger.
Gate had a goal disallowed early in the second half as the ball was ruled to have gone out of play before being crossed.
Twice Lewis went close with shots that beat the keeper but flew wide. Gate pressed for an equaliser as Kenny Mayers headed inches over and Harvie shot wide after a fine run.
The first division club seemed content for the visitors to come at them, then look to catch Gate on the break.
And that’s what happened on 90 minutes, when the ball for played through from a throw for Jake Williamson to put the game behind Gate in the 90th minute and secure their May 2 visit to Common Edge.
