Squires Gate 2 Bootle 1

BACK-TO-BACK 2-1 wins have lifted Squires Gate to fourth in the Vodkat League premier division as they overcame a tough Bootle side and dreadful conditions.

Bootle looked dangerous in the early stages, despite playing into the howling gale, and were awarded a penalty when skipper Tom Benfield brought down Ronnie Morgan.

But keeper Neil Beesley dived to his right to save the spot-kick and pulled off another top save on nine minutes.

Gate gradually came to terms with the elements and took the lead on the half-hour, when Scott Harries raced down the left and drew the keeper out of his goal before finding the net.

Kenny Mayers doubled the lead six minutes later, running on to a Ben Fishwick chip before lobbing the advancing keeper.

Gate started the second half defending their lead, which was reduced to a single goal in the 51st minute, when Chris Tyson gave Beesley no chance with a shot into the bottom corner.

The home side had their backs to the wall in the closing stages but still looked to attack, with Ben Fishwick and Harries making inroads.

Dave McCann was outstanding marshalling the defence alongside Benfield as Gate held out for the hard-earned points.

Gate team: Beesley, Richards, Thomas, McCann, Benfield, McKendrick, Lewis, Fishwick, Bennett, Mayers, Harries; subs, Adjei, Harvie, Bartlett, Taylor, McKenna.
