Fylde amateur football review: Blackpool docked points after losing '˜decider', Sunday cup finals spectacular at Fleetwood

The final weekend of the West Lancashire League season was an anticlimax for Fylde coast clubs.

Not only were Blackpool Wren Rovers pipped to the premier division title by Longridge Town, who beat them 1-0 at Bruce Park on the final day, but Garstang and Poulton lost their last matches too.

It’s perhaps as well Wrens did lose the title ‘decider’ and spare the competition some controversy as they have subsequently been docked six points for fielding an ineligible player in a game last month.

It means that after all the anticipation surrounding last weekend’s ‘winner-takes-all’ clash, Longridge have finished up champions by a nine-point margin.

Despite having the points docked, Wrens are 13 points clear in second and manager King is already plotting to win back the title next year. He was due to hold talks this week about securing his squad for the 2017-18 campaign.

King was able to put Saturday’s defeat into perspective, telling The Gazette: “We won the Richardson Cup and Wilf Carr Memorial Trophy, and finished runners-up in two more competitions, so it has to go down as a successful season but work for the next one starts pretty much straight away.”

Already secure in fourth place in the premier division, Garstang finished with a 2-0 defeat at Vickerstown, where Jackson Round scored a goal in each half.

Poulton had to settle for fourth too in the first division after a 4-0 defeat at Stoneclough, all the goals coming in the final 25 minutes.

Division One club Wyre Villa have advertised for new managers for their first team and reserve side.

The curtain came down on the Blackpool and Fylde Sunday Alliance season with cup finals day at Fleetwood Town.

All three Berry’s Beds Divisional Cup finals were staged at Highbury on Sunday, kicking off with the division two match between champions Broomheads Estate Agency and FC Albion.

This was a tight game but the Broomheads forward line had too much for Albion.

Danny Green scored the first two before man of the match Kenny Cram helped himself to a hat-trick to make the final score 5-0.

The Division One Cup final was the game of the day as champions Shovels faced league runners-up Bloomfield Brewhouse.

Bloomfield went 2-0 up through Craig Harding and Baz Davenport.

Shovels replied immediately through Josh Walker before man of the match Tyler Atack scored a stunning free-kick to level it up.

There were chances for both teams but the game ended up 2-2.

That meant extra-time, which was just as tight until Davenport popped up to grab the winner in the second period.

Premier division champions Blackhurst Budd faced Appletree Finance in the last final of the day and they went in 1-0 up at the break through Ryan Vaughan.

In the second half the champions moved up a gear and scored further goals through Liam Frend, Gary Pett and Ric Seear.

Scott Grimes pulled one back only for Ben Seear to complete Budd’s 5-1 win. Michael Clark was voted man of the match.

Having added the divisional cup to their league title, Budd did to complete the treble at Bloomfield Road tomorrow night, when they face league runners-up Additions in the Gledhill Cup final.

Additions completed their premier division on Sunday with a 5-1 win over A&P Autos, in which Adam Shore grabbed a hat-trick.Ashley Robinson and Nathan Hine scored the others and Lee Barker replied.

The division two campaign ended in thrilling style with a 5-5 draw between Lane Ends (Mark Leonard 2, Ben Western, David Smith, Steven Turner) and The George (Joey Crookall, Ryan Davis, Tom Davis, Dylan Robbins, Joe Greatrex).
