FLEETWOOD Town’s delight at knocking a League One basement club out of the FA Cup has been followed by the thrill of drawing a second one.

Town’s reward for their historic 2-0 Highbury victory over Wycombe is a home second-round draw on December 3/4 against Yeovil Town, the only team below the Chairboys in the Football League’s third tier.

Fleetwood manager Micky Mellon hailed his team’s battling spirit as they survived more than 45 minutes with 10 men to record their first ever win over League opposition courtesy of goals by Andy Mangan and the outstanding Jamie Vardy.

Richard Brodie was sent off before half-time for elbowing defender Leon Johnson, but Fleetwood battled on to glory and Mellon said: “You expect it to be tough when you go down to 10 men but it was a fantastic team performance.

“We just had to be gritty and determined.

“They worked their socks off and I’m so proud of them. It was a great cup tie.”

Town will have to rearrange their Conference trip to Hayes and Yeading to accommodate another huge Highbury FA Cup day and the draw has delighted chairman Andy Pilley.

He said: “It’s exactly what we’d have wanted. We wanted a home tie first and foremost. We have superb facilities here and can accommodate what should be a really good tie.

“We can pit our wits against League opposition again. We’ll show Yeovil due respect but we’ll fancy our chance and will give them a very good game.

“There’s a real feelgood factor around the place at the moment. It’s vibrant and exciting, and we have incredible momentum.

“The atmosphere in the dressing room has never been better in the eight years I’ve been here and we look forward to the next round.”
