AFC Fylde have signed striker Jimmy McCarthy from Evo-Stik First Division South side Leek Town on an 18-month contract.

The 26-year-old, signed fro a nominal fee, boosts the Coasters’ attacking options following the departures of Richie Allen and Keigan Parker.

McCarthy, who played under Fylde boss Dave Challinor at Colwyn Bay last season, has netted 14 goals this season for Leek.

McCarthy said: “I had a few offers to consider, but when Dave came in for me I was delighted to join a club who are ambitious and want to climb the pyramid.

“I really enjoyed my time at Colwyn Bay, so to link up with Dave and (assistant) Colin Woodthorpe again is great for me. I had a great time helping them win promotion last season and I want to do it again with Fylde.

“I’m sad to leave Leek Town as I was really enjoying my football there but I see this move as a big challenge and I can’t wait to get going.”

Challinor said: “ Jimmy is someone we targeted when we came to the club, but with the quality we had at the time we didn’t need to add another pacy forward.

“That changed when we lost Richie and Keigan, and we needed to bring in replacements quickly.

“Jimmy was a fundamental player in our promoting-winning side, creating and scoring vital goals and he can do the same here.”

McCarthy’s other clubs include Alsager, Altrincham and Chester, and he had trials with Crewe Alexandra in 2010. Fylde’s visit to Cammell Laird was frozen off on Saturday, along with every fixture bar one in Evo-Stik First Division North.

The entire North West Counties League programme was wiped out.
