Fleetwood Town boss Graham Alexander is demanding the team up their game in time for the big kick-off on Saturday.

Town followed heartening friendly wins over Preston and Coventry with a 1-1 draw at Southport, though the display was not to the high standard required by Alexander, who said: “We were a little bit flat and never really got going.

“I was a bit disappointed and it showed that we still have a lot of work to do, so we shouldn’t get carried away by results we had against Coventry and Preston.

“We have a lot of improving to do - I can understand it, but I can’t accept it.”

Fleetwood have enjoyed a fantastic pre-season campaign, and go into the new season full of spirit

It’s the first time fans will see Alexander’s style stamped on the squad, after he took over from Micky Mellon half-way through last term.

Alexander continued: “You want the highest standards in training and in every game we play.

“But, all-in-all over the whole of the pre-season, the lads have been fantastic - they have worked really hard.

“The Southport game was probably the first dip for us.“

Fleetwood start their season this Saturday against Dagenham and Redbridge, aiming for nothing less than promotion from League Two.

And Alexander is confident things will go well if they stick to the plan.

“We need to stick to our principles, no matter who we are playing,” he said.

“We have qualities and if we don’t use them we are doing ourselves an injustice.

“The lads are fit and we can get goals.”
