Paul Gascoigne has dismissed talk of England not taking Wayne Rooney to the European Championships this summer as ‘daft’.

Much has been said about whether or not Rooney should be involved in the national side this summer, after injury and a loss of form has blighted his season with Manchester United.

But Gazza, who played 57 times for England and spoke to The Gazette ahead of his visit to Blackpool for a special dinner at VIVA in June, was quick to blast any talk of him missing the trip.

“Talk of Rooney not going to the Euros is daft,” he told The Gazette. His experience is so important for England and will be vital this summer.”

Rooney returned to action for Manchester United in last night’s FA Cup win at West Ham and is on course to be fully fit as Roy Hodgson’s side head to France.

Gascoigne is no stranger to success in the European Championships, helping England to the semi-finals in 1996. And he feels Hodgson’s could be in for a decent summer, adding: “I think we could do OK this time in the Euros.

“I really like Dele Alli, Ross Barkley and Harry Kane, they are all really important.

“I loved playing for England, I loved every game and they were the best experiences of my life.”

The 48-year-old made the headlines in recent weeks suggesting his health was once again deteriorating.

But he insists that’s all behind him now, and revealed he’s set to appear in a TV interview with Piers Morgan next week.

“I’m fine now, I’m over the problems I had recently,” he said.

“I am due to do some television interviews next week and hopefully you’ll all see how well I’m doing on GMTV on Wednesday.”

Gazza will appear in a special one-off show in Blackpool on Friday 25th June 2016 arranged by EBF Boxing’s James Ward and tickets are on sale now.
