Vardy will be part of final promotion push, vows boss

FLEETWOOD boss Micky Mellon says he is certain that striker Jamie Vardy will be at Highbury to help the club’s final push towards the magic goal of the Football League, writes STEVE SIMPSON.
Speculation is mounting that Vardy could be sold before the transfer window closes next Tuesday but then be loaned back to Fleetwood for the remainder of the campaign, with Crystal Palace reported to be ready to do such a deal for the player rated in the £1m bracket by Town.
Asked if Vardy would see out the season at Fleetwood, Mellon said: “No doubt, 100 per cent. He will be here until the summer.
“It doesn’t bother me (the speculation). This is all part and parcel of management. I want people to like all my players.”
Fleetwood reached the pinnacle of the Blue Square Bet Premier following their 3-1 win over Braintree and Mellon said: “We know we are at the front and we want to stay there. We don’t take anything for granted and know there is a lot more hard work to do.
“There is no more pressure than usual and we are enjoying our football. We have been on this road (bidding for promotion) before and are quite experienced at it, and I won’t let the players get carried away.
“I know what it takes to get you across that line – it’s all about patience and not thinking too far ahead.
n BRAZILIAN Magno Vieira made a big impact on his first start since Boxing Day, scoring two goals, and his only regret was that he didn’t turn it into a hat-trick.
Vieira said: “It is a special night for the club –top of the league now. Hopefully we will stay there and be champions.
“We knew we would get goals – we didn’t panic and kept passing the ball. We made sure we scored when the chances came. We could have scored more but we got the three points.
“I was looking forward to getting a hat-trick because I knew there were goals in the game. It has been stop-start with injuries but now hopefully I will get more goals.
“I am looking forward to the rest of the season and to playing as many games as I can. It’s an exciting time for the squad. We have to stay strong together, and make sure we keep our focus and stay top of the league.
“I don’t think the boys are under pressure. We know we are a good team and we have to carry on doing what we have been doing.”
n BRAINTREE manager Alan Devonshire was unhappy at the sending-off of Ben Wright and at referee Ross Joyce’s failure to award a penalty when Thomas Aswad was felled late in the second half.
“To me it wasn’t a red card – it was a booking at most and it changed the game. We came here to have a go and had a decision like that. We had a definite penalty which wasn’t given. Theirs looked a bit 50-50 to us. I feel let down by some of the decisions.”
