Superb Town open door for title charge
Witton Albion 0 Fleetwood 3
ON-FIRE Fleetwood did their promotion hopes and title prospects a power of good by crushing the runaway league leaders.
Town totally outplayed Witton in front of the biggest crowd of the season at Wincham Park, 1,014.
A fifth successive clean sheet and a sixth game unbeaten saw Fleetwood continue the outstanding form that could now take them to the top of the Unibond premier division if they win their three games in hand.
Skipper Jamie Milligan went close before Kieran Walmsley opened the scoring after 10 minutes, making the most of a mix-up in the Witton defence to fire past keeper Jon Kennedy from the edge of the box.
Liam Brownhill's drive was well handled by Town's seemingly unbeatable keeper Danny Hurst on 22 minutes but the best chances were at the other end.
Striker Phil Denney tested Kennedy following a break by Andy Bell and Nathan Pond could not quite connect with Milligan's free-kick.
The much-threatened second goal arrived on 34 minutes when Kennedy failed to hold Milligan's long-range effort and Bell pounced to move into double figures for this highly productive season.
Fleetwood remained in control after half-time as both Bell and Walmsley had chances to double their tally.
A Mark Peers free-kick which flashed past the post was as close as Albion went to a reply, while Denney forced another save out of Kennedy.
Milligan applied the icing to the cake with his 16th of the campaign after 76 minutes, collecting Walmsley's short corner before sending an angled drive dipping into the far corner.
It could have been worse for Witton but Walmsley's shot smashed against the inside of the post and Shaun Bealey somehow sliced wide from no more than two yards.
Fleetwood must squeeze eight matches into the final month of the season, starting at home to promotion rivals Guiseley on Saturday, but they have every incentive to find those extra reserves of energy.
