Sparkling Vardy in five-star show

Fleetwood Town 9, Colne 1. The Galaxy Football Lancashire League meeting between Fleetwood Town and Colne took on a greater relevance following the weekend’s postponements as Micky Mellon and Colne boss Nigel Coates opted to field first-team line-ups last night.

The result was five goals for Jamie Vardy as Town almost hit double-figures ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Cambridge.

The side occupying 12th position in the North West Counties League produced the first attack but Andy Mangan responded with a rocket shot that keeper Chris Thompson could only parry. Richard Brodie pounced but fouled his marker in the process.

Brodie then produced a good run down the rightand crossed but Jamie Vardy was crowded out.

Vardy then pressurised a defender into a back-header which Thompson needed to save, while at the other end Scott Davies saved Mark Threlfall’s low drive. The deadlock was broken just before the half-hour mark, when a Vardy cross presented Brodie with a simple tap-in.

Skipper Nathan Pond pulled off a good block when Danny Boyle charged into the Town box, and Colne continued to press as Tinker’s chip struck the bar and settled on the roof of the net.

Mangan increased the lead with a driven shot five minutes later. The striker turned provider just two minutes later, when a well-placed pass enabled Vardy to make it 3-0.

Dominic Craig pulled Colne back into the game following a good move only for Vardy’s second to make it 4-1 at half-time.

Town’s top scorer completed his hat-trick with an angled shot from the edge of the box four minutes after the restart, adding his fourth four minutes later.

Substitute Gareth Seddon scored Town’s seventh after good work from Peter Cavanagh. Brodie spurned several chances but continued to create goals for others, his splendid work into the box ending with Vardy netting his fifth.

Brodie finally recorded his second goal, from a Jamie Milligan corner, to complete the scoring.
