Mellon calls for extra promotion

FLEETWOOD Town boss Micky Mellon, preparing for an important clash at Crawley Town tomorrow, has joined the growing chorus for an extra club from the Blue Square Bet Premier to be elevated to the Football League.

At present the champions go up as of right, with a second team promoted via the play-offs.

Mellon wants to see two teams go up automatically, with the third place decided by play-offs featuring the teams finishing from third to sixth spots.

The Fleetwood boss said: "The Blue Square Premier is full of former League clubs desperate to get back, and at the moment there is bottle-neck of big clubs.

"With all due respect to teams currently in League Two, there are clubs in our division with far bigger grounds and facilities that those already in the Football League screaming to get in and it is important that the fans don't get discouraged.

"I support any move to get an extra club promoted 100 per cent."

Mellon is happy with the side's progress so far prior to tomorrow's match at Crawley, which pits fifth-placed Fleetwood against the home side, who are in third place in the league standings.

He said: "To get 10 points from six games so far is very encouraging because we could hardly have had a tougher start as we have already played three teams who got to the play-offs last season (Luton, Rushden and Diamonds and York) and beaten Mansfield, who are top of the table.

"We also had to play Southport, who finished top of our division last year.

"But I am not making any predictions about where we are going to finish because you only get in trouble of you try to do that - all you can do is what I have said all along, you go into every match trying to win it."
