Barry: We’ll be in League Two when I next play

ANTHONY Barry accepts he will not play again this season – but he has every confidence that Fleetwood Town will win promotion to the Football League without him.

The midfielder damaged knee ligaments in only the second match of the season against Darlington and underwent a second operation last Thursday after the first proved unsuccessful.

It’s a stark contrast to last season, when the 25-year-old had more game-time than any other Town player, which makes this season’s injury agony all the harder for the Liverpudlian to bear.

Barry said: “It’s been a bit of nightmare not being involved. The first op didn’t work and we weren’t too happy about that.

“I should have been playing again by December but it wasn’t improving and so we smelled a rat.

“A rescan showed a piece of floating bone had been missed and so I needed to have the same operation done again.

“I’d love to have been out there helping the team and helping us to have got a few more points, but I’m sure the injury is behind me know and the knee feels a million times better already.”

Barry, who has Football League experience with Yeovil and Chester, has no doubt Town will be members of the 92 club by the time he makes his comeback. He added: “I can’t see it going down to the wire with Wrexham. I can’t anyone staying with us. We will pull clear.

“We are a different animal to last year. Our forward line makes a massive difference – we have so much firepower. There are goals galore in this side.”

And Barry is just as sure that he will be fighting for a place in the first fixture in August, which he expects to be in League Two.

“I only had the op last Thurday, so I’ll be taking it easy for a few weeks. Then I’ll do some training down at Lilleshall to make sure I’m ready to report in for pre-season with the rest of the lads.”
