Town's relegation battle shocks Crewe boss Davis

Already relegated Crewe did Town a favour last weekend when they beat fellow strugglers Doncaster Rovers 3-1 and, with Blackpool’s defeat to Wigan and Town’s 3-1 loss at Walsall, it means that due to Town’s superior goal difference it is a two-horse race for survival between Fleetwood and Blackpool.

And Davis – whose son has recovered from an ankle injury but has not featured in Pressley’s side since he scored an own goal in the 2-0 defeat against Barnsley in March – says he will continue to select his strongest side for Sunday’s finale to be fair to all involved in the relegation scrap.

He said: “With Joe being there I’ve seen Fleetwood about 10 times this season. They play to their strengths and stick to their system.

“They changed that slightly against Walsall, so we know they can adapt and Steven (Pressley) has some strong options.

“They have a strong group, so I am surprised that they have been involved in a relegation fight.

“They need something from the game and with something riding on it.

“It is going to be a tough one but one we are all looking forward to.”

Town need just a point to ensure survival and Davis says it will be an emotional and pressurised game for Fleetwood with so much riding on it.

Davis’ men’s fate was sealed last month but he is keen to end the campaign on a high.

He said: “After our win over Doncaster, it looks like either being Fleetwood or Blackpool, so as near neighbours, I am sure there will be a lot of stuff floating about on Twitter and social media. There is no pressure on us. I had hoped there was going to be but it wasn’t to be. Our results didn’t allow us to get close enough.

“They need at least a point I would have thought to be safe, but if we can finish the season with a win then it leaves them needing a favour from Peterborough against Blackpool.

“We have been involved on the final day in the last couple of seasons and it is not an easy thing to deal with.

“It is a very emotional and draining day for everyone involved in it. There is a lot of pressure that comes with that and players react in different ways.

“I know what Steven (Pressley) his staff, players and their crowd will be going through but they know we will be professional and will be looking to end the season with an away win. We will approach the game in the same way we did for Doncaster.”
