Rosler crowned League One manager of season

Fleetwood Town have been transformed under Uwe Rosler from relegation battlers to surprise promotion contenders, so it is no surprise the head coach has been crowned the EFL's League One manager of the season.

Town’s right wing-back Conor McLaughlin has also been named in the team of the year, the results based on votes submitted by a regional media representative of each of the 72 EFL clubs.

Rosler’s team have already surpassed the club’s record League One points tally and are a world away from the side embroiled in a fight for survival 12 months ago.

But third-placed Town still have eight games to go and, speaking to The Gazette before Saturday’s 0-0 draw with AFC Wimbledon, Rosler warned of the dangers of analysing a season too soon.

He said: “It is very dangerous to evaluate a season with nine to 10 games to go. We just need to get our heads down and assess the season at the end, when we know what we have achieved. Then we can say who has had a fantastic season.

“A lot of the players are having a very strong season and I hope it continues.

“In the final games of the season you need to find some sort of energy. It is about willpower, mentality.

“Teams have to play for something and we need to go the extra yard.”

Rosler spent nine months out of the game before taking the Fleetwood job, having been among the managers sacked by Leeds United in their bid for a return to the Premier League.

And he stated this month that he is enjoying his football again. “After what happened at Leeds, I still find it very hard to take,” Rosler said.

“I did exactly what the chairman told me but I needed a club where I would find my happiness, working with players in a stable environment. I found that with Fleetwood from day one.

“It wasn’t a matter of money but it was about enjoying myself again. That’s why I’m here and we will see where it takes us.”
