New formation could just be for Christmas

Town are undefeated since first trialling a wing-back formation in extra-time of their FA Cup first round replay win over National League side Southport.

Rosler switched to a 3-5-2 wing-back formation after their cup game finished 1-1 with Southport and they scored three goals in the opening 10 minutes of extra-time to wrap up the game.

Since then they have beaten Chesterfield 2-1, today’s opponents Shrewsbury Town 3-0 and drew 2-2 at AFC Wimbledon last weekend.

Both wing-backs Amari’i Bell and Conor McLaughlin have scored two goals apiece and chipped in with a couple of assists too.

Eighth-placed Town head to League One’s bottom side this afternoon for their FA Cup second round clash.

While Rosler believes the formation is not just aiding Town’s players but is also comfortable for a lot of them, he hinted that he may move from it as the season progresses.

He said: “It is not only the wing-backs; we have found a way now where we have players in a position where they are feeling very comfortable.

“Does that mean we will be playing the whole season in that system? I don’t think so.

“I think there will come times (with players) back from injuries, from suspension, maybe in January somebody gets sold, you never know then we might have to find a new way again.

“But at the moment the players feel very comfortable in that way.

“We can put a lot of pressure on the opposition and we are also looking very good and powerful from set-pieces.”
