How spirit of John Lennon inspired the Cod Army

But there is a peculiar tale behind the fans’ new anthem Twist and Shout – a nod to Beatles legend John Lennon’s links to the seaside.

Lennon’s cousin Stan Parks lived on The Esplanade and the Liverpulian songwriter used to visit for holidays. He returned with the Fab Four to perform at Marine Hall on August 25, 1962.

And with Fleetwood flying high, the Cod Army are bringing the spirit of the Swinging Sixties to Highbury and stadiums across League One with their new favoured tune.

Head coach Uwe Rosler hailed their fantastic support after more than 3,000 twisted and shouted out of the ground as Saturday’s 3-0 win over Northampton stretched their unbeaten run to 17 games.

The Town boss wants the vibrant atmosphere to continue for their crunch double-header away to former Town boss Graham Alexander’s Scunthorpe on Saturday and at home to fourth-placed Bolton a week later.

Rosler said of the support: “Fantastic. I think everybody lives the dream and I will not stop supporters dreaming.

“We need that sort of atmosphere. I think the Bolton game is sold out more or less and will be a fantastic occasion. That helps the players, especially in critical moments, like the first 20 minutes on Saturday.”

Rosler also praised some top performers on the field. He said: “You don’t hear me very often single out individuals but Alex Cairns was top-drawer in decisive moments. Bobby Grant, David Ball, Kyle Dempsey and Conor McLaughlin, who is not regularly training – outstanding.”
