Fleetwood win race to sign Wycome striker Holloway

Town boss Steven Pressley’s former club Rangers, Wigan and Rotherham were all rumoured to be chasing the 23-year-old former Wales youth international.

But the out of contract forward, who can also fill in at centre-back and spent time on loan at Town’s League One rivals Oldham Athletic last term, has just signed a two-year deal at Highbury.

It is believed Town will have to pay League Two outfit Wycombe a compensation fee due to Holloway’s age and Wanderers say he turned down a new deal at the club to move to the Fylde coast.

He said: “I’m buzzing to sign for Fleetwood.

“I’m glad to be staying in League One I had a little spell a few months ago (at Oldham) and I did quite well.

“So I’ve been excited to hopefully stay in League One and I think Fleetwood could be the right decision for me.

“I was quite nervous (when I joined Oldham) because I had never played in League One before but I settled in really quickly and found my feet.

“So hopefully now next season I can do exactly that again and get some more goals for Fleetwood.

“(The move to Highbury) has only been a month or so in the making.

“My agent rang me up and said he had got interest at a club which he knows well (Fleetwood) and so I said why not, lets go for it.

He came through the ranks at Cardiff City before moving to Bristol City but he could not force his way into the first team and he was loaned to Bath City before moving at Newport and then Wycombe.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth described Holloway as a rough diamond when he signed him two years ago.

He said: “We spotted something in Aaron that nobody else has seen yet, and we’re willing to work on that, but this will take time because he’s had a lot of injuries.

“He needs nurturing and looking after and we’re willing to do that here. If he carries on the way he’s going I think he could be one hell of a player.”
