Town are believed to have splashed out more than £400,000 to turn Dempsey’s season-long loan from the Terriers into a permanent switch, which officially takes effect on July 1.

The midfielder, 21, made 24 appearances for Championship club Huddersfield following a £300,000 switch from Carlisle in 2015.

He was allowed to join Town on loan last August after failing to break back into David Wagner’s team.

Dempsey was a key player at Highbury this season, helping Town to finish fourth and reach the League One play-offs for the first time in their history.

The Cumbrian thanked the Huddersfield fans for their support but is looking forward to pushing on at Fleetwood.

Dempsey wrote on social media: “I’d just like to take a minute to thank all the Huddersfield Town fans for making me feel so welcome every time I stepped on and off the pitch.

“Unfortunately things didn’t work out the way I wanted them to but that is football.

“Sometimes you have just got to move on but thank you very much to every single one of you.

“Now I’d just like to say how pleased I am to sign for Fleetwood. The way you made me feel from day one was exceptional.

“Now with this great dressing room I’m looking to keep pushing and progressing as a player and as a team, and to have another successful couple of seasons with that extra push we know we have.”

A charity match at Highbury raised almost £42,000 for a former player with Motor Neurone Disease.

Around 5,000 attended the March benefit match between Rangers Legends and an England Select at Highbury for 40-year-old Dutchman Fernando Ricksen’s MND foundation.

The match was staged on the day Town visited Bury and organiser Stan Gordon confirmed that £41,962 was raised for ex-Rangers player Ricksen’s charity.
