Antoni Sarcevic missed a golden chance to fire Fleetwood Town back into the promotion race as Graham Alexander’s men were forced to settle for a point against table-topping Rochdale.
Iain Hume put the ball in the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes but his strike was ruled out for offside.
Then Sarcevic missed two golden chances, the second coming after a superb run from David Ball, the midfield man with time to pick his slot but blazing over.
Town had the better of the opening 45 minutes but could have gone behind shortly after the break, Jamie Allen’s overhead kick coming back off the woodwork.
But there were chances for the home side to snatch it, Jon Parkin getting his feet tangled trying to backheel the ball past Josh Lillis following a determined run by Matty Blair, who himself could have scored, a blistering 18 yard effort pushed wide by the Dale keeper.
The gap to Chesterfield in third closes by just a point.
