Defiant McDonald got it wrong, says Wright

Alan Wright says Neil McDonald was 'overzealous' in claiming Blackpool dominated the draw at Fleetwood.

The former defender played for both clubs during a 20-year career in which he topped 700 League appearences.

Wright, whose playing career started at Pool in 1989 and ended at Town five years ago, was working as a radio pundit at Highbury on Saturday and didn’t agree with the manager’s verdict.

“I think Neil McDonald was a little overzealous in saying Blackpool dominated,” he told BBC Radio Lancashire. “I don’t think they did, especially in the first half-hour, when they were completely on the back foot. It was pretty even beyond that.

“It’s all about opinions and we all see things differently, but I’m not sure he’s seen it the same as most people.

“Whether he’s being cautious in his words I’m not too sure. I think he probably got it slightly wrong.”

The draw left both clubs needing points from their last two games, and Wright fears at least one of them could fall into League Two.

He said: “There’s a good chance we could lose one of Blackpool or Fleetwood. We don’t ideally want to lose either but after Saturday’s results that could be the case.

“We could be sat here in two weeks saying both teams picked up six points and are safe. On the flip-side they could both lose both – it’s in the stars at the moment.”

Town boss Steven Pressley wasn’t as pleased with Saturday’s game as his Blackpool counterpart, claiming he was disappointed his side didn’t win. And Wright felt that was refreshing to hear.

“I think Steven Pressley summed up the game perfectly,” said the 44-year-old, who now works for Manchester City’s academy. “I think he speaks honestly and credit to him for that.

“He touched on the physical side of playing at Millwall the Tuesday before. I think he was disappointed with the performance (against Blackpool) but happy with the result.”
