We'll give success on road our best shot, says Blackpool boss

Gary Bowyer is glad his Blackpool players are finding their shooting boots after more than 200 attempts on goal.

The Seasiders were among the first teams in the country to rack up 200 goal attempts this season, though they had managed to convert only 23 from 17 games in all competitions before last weekend’s 4-2 home win over high-flying Doncaster.

Bowyer is pleased that his side are creating so many shooting opportunities, but he added that they must continue to finish as clinically as they did last Saturday in order to progress up the League Two table.

The Pool boss said: “Anybody who has seen us play this season has seen the number of chances we have created. I was given the statistics last week and we were one of the first teams to have 200 goal attempts.

“That’s great but on the flipside we have not been clinical enough with those chances. But we certainly were on Saturday with some wonderful strikes.”

Now Bowyer wants more of the same this weekend at Cheltenham. And Pool already know they can score against the Robins, striker Kyle Vassell having netted both goals against them in the 2-1 Checkatrade Trophy win at Bloomfield Road back in August.

But the Seasiders have won only once on the road all season – 3-0 at Yeovil at the start of September.

Pool have put in some good performances on their travels but have been denied further victories by some wayward finishing, errors and the occasional debatable refereeing decision.

But whatever the reasons, Bowyer says it is time for Blackpool to improve their record of one win from nine away games this season.

He added: “We have gone away from home and we have performed well without actually picking up the points, so it is something we have got to work on very hard and try to put right this weekend.”

Surrey-based referee Gavin Ward will be the man in charge at Whaddon Road on Saturday.

The last time Ward took charge of Pool they were in the Championship, losing 3-0 at Reading in October 2014.

Blackpool have been drawn away to Bolton in the first round of the FA Youth Cup next Wednesday. The Macron Stadium clash kicks off at 7pm.
