Transfer latest: Pool have ‘irons in the fire’

BLACKPOOL are waiting by the phone after making two offers ahead of tonight’s transfer deadline.

Manager Ian Holloway, who hopes to seal both deals before the window closes at 11pm, also confirmed that Matt Phillips and Lomana LuaLua will be staying at Bloomfield Road, despite interest from several rival clubs.

Holloway said: “Our irons are well and truly rammed into the fire, but whether we can get anything out of it I don’t know.

“If we can get the quality of player in that we’ve bid for, then I’ll be more than happy.

“The more players I have, and the more options I have, the better it is for Blackpool.”

Cardiff, Bolton and Middlesbrough are among a host of clubs linked with Phillips.

One player who looks to be on his way out is striker Billy Clarke, who should join Crawley on a free transfer this afternoon, but Holloway confirmed no-one else would be going through the exit door today.

The manager added: “I’ll be happy when the window closes and I don’t anticipate anyone else leaving.

“I have the option to loan some players out on emergency loans if we have to, and I think our dealings this month have left us in a really strong position.

“Cardiff seemed to think they could sign Matty Phillips. Well, with the greatest respect, who do they think they are?

“I think Matt’s clever enough to know that he is at the right club. He realises that when one of the big clubs comes for him and are willing to pay the right amount of money, we’ll let him go. But until then, he’s at the right club.

“He’s got none of the frustrations that Charlie Adam had this time last year, and if you speak to him he’ll tell you he’s happy here. Matt is just one of the fantastic young players we have here at the club.”
