SOUTHAMPTON boss Nigel Adkins has denied making an illegal approach for Blackpool’s Matt Phillips.
The newly-promoted Saints have been reported to the Premier League by the Seasiders after it was alleged they contacted Phillips’ agent without going through the proper channels.
While admitting he is interested in the 21-year-old winger, Adkins was quick to hit out at tapping-up claims.
“We do everything properly and by the book,” he said.
“I know our chairman has tried to contact Blackpool’s chairman.
“We’ve had a conversation with the chief executive and I’ve spoken to Ian Holloway myself. We will conduct our transfer business privately behind the scenes.
“Obviously this situation has now arisen, and we will take action on that and respond in the appropriate manner.”
Phillips is one of three Pool players away on international duty this week.
He and Matt Gilks trained with Scotland yesterday, while Craig Cathcart linked up with Northern Ireland.
Scotland face Australia at Hibernian tomorrow, when Northern Ireland meet Finland at Windsor Park.
All three players are due back at Squires Gate on Thursday and will travel with the Seasiders squad the following day ahead of Saturday’s match at Millwall.
