Reds in talks to sign Adam

Charlie Adam celebrates scoring against Liverpool

Charlie Adam celebrates scoring against Liverpool

POOL have confirmed they’ve held “preliminary discussions” with Liverpool and other Premier League clubs about Charlie Adam.

But chairman Karl Oyston insists no firm offers have been made and it’s news to him if the Scot is about to leave.

Media reports suggest Adam will hold talks with Liverpool and Aston Villa later this week.

Oyston told The Gazette: “We’ve had a few discussions this summer but nothing conclusive so really there is nothing to report.

“Are the reports wide of the mark? I’m sure that football clubs have talks with lots of players all summer that they probably shouldn’t do.

“I’m sure that goes on. If January is anything to go by that is certainly the case.

“It is always difficult (when speculation starts).”

Asked to confirm Liverpool had made contact, he replied: “We’ve had a few very preliminary discussions and enquiries but nothing of any substance so there really is nothing to report at this stage about interest from anyone.”

Oyston turned down a £6.4m bid from Liverpool in January, and a lesser bid from Tottenham.

It would take at least £8m to persuade the chairman to part with the club’s star player

Asked if he accepted Adam wouldn’t be at Bloomfield Road next season, Oyston said: “You are asking me to comment on something that it totally outside my control.

“I don’t control what offers or proposals other clubs will put to us.”

But told he did control it – ‘you could,’ I said, ‘be offered £50m and say no? – Oyston replied: “Yes of course I could but I think I’d be hauled off in a little van and put in a straitjacket and not released for sometime.

“But, yes, it would be my call at that stage (when a bid is made) but for that to happen someone else has to offer something that is creditable and represents fair value and the loss of a player that has done very well for us.

“That part isn’t in my control is what I mean. I can’t determine what other clubs will offer us.”

Whatever Oyston says, it is clear that Pool are likely to lose their skipper at some stage before the start of next season.

It has been mooted that they might look for a cash plus player deal should a transfer happen, with Jonjo Shelvey at Liverpool and former loanee Barry Bannan at Aston Villa players that might interest boss Ian Holloway.

“Would we do a part player swap? It depends who it is,” added Oyston. “If we deal with a good club with good players then probably, yes.”

think we'll settle for 8 mill he cost 500,000 profit -------------------------7.5 mill ----------minus 1.5 mill and maybe another 1.5 mill to charlie -----so profit to pool 4.5 mill and great service for 2 seasons, not bad i'd say . wish he would stay though cos he'll end up bench warming i hiope i'm wrong .

Each year over the last five years we have seen the same pattern of transfer dealings as this one and to be fair where have we gone wrong overall? We have lived up to the towns motto of 'Progress' very admirably. Although the panic has set in amongst the fans every year the outcome has been the same. The team plays very attractive football, we have seen unrivalled success, we've saved on wages (a bigger factor than you may think), the fan base has increased steadily and the club is generally a lot healthier. Furthermore, we have been a model for the smaller clubs to follow and bigger clubs come to that. I'm sure they and many of the bigger clubs who are down at the moment would swop places if they could. I am sure plenty of irons have been placed in the fire in terms of transfers. Deals don't happen overnight these days, if that were the case, David Vaughan would have been a Sunderland or West Brom player nearly a fortnight ago. Chill out with less of the doom and gloom and let the management team bring in the people they want at the pace they believe to be right ... that's what they're paid for.

By the way this is the 40th anniversary of Blackpool winning a European Cup. Anyone remember it? The Anglo Italian Cup in 1971. Cant be certain but think Bob Hatton scored 4 or 5 goals in the final. Bit before my day mind you.

exile paul That may all be well and good for Ollie but I am sure the scum called players agents would announce any possible deals to the world to try and get a bidding war going.

Exile Paul, maybe but thought we would have had a sniff of a signing be it Reg Varney JP or someone new on a free.
