Personal best for crack-shot Crainey

STEPHEN Crainey has achieved something he’s never done before – scored twice in the same season.

The full-back’s peach of a free-kick into the top corner, to ensure Pool claimed a point against Pompey on Saturday, followed his strike against Birmingham in September.

And the Seasiders’ new scoring sensation doesn’t see why he can’t get more. Crainey said: “Two goals in a season – it’s not bad for me, the most I’ve ever got!

“I like to get forward. I know that was a free kick on Saturday but I do try to join in the attacks.

“The manager wants both his full-backs to get forward and to try to get goalscoring opportunities.

“I’ll be pushing a few out of the way when we’re awarded a free-kick in future. I’ll try my luck again and hopefully get a few more this season.”

Crainey was disappointed the Seasiders couldn’t see off Portsmouth and claim all three points but he was quick to pay tribute to the visitors.

“I think Portsmouth did a good job on us,” he said. “We had the majority of the play but they defended really well and had a few chances.

“We were doing all we could to try to win it – I was playing left wing almost at the end. You know what the manager is like – we just kind of go for it!

“He told me to stay forward. We threw the kitchen sink at it but fair play to Portsmouth – they had a good gameplan and it worked for them.

“The dressing room afterwards was a mix of happiness and disappointment. We’ve been playing really well recently and we thought we could win that game, but you aren’t going to get your own way every time.

“It didn’t quite happen for us on Saturday, so we move on to the next game.

“But the good thing is that we didn’t lose. The boys showed great character to come back from a goal behind and it is definitely a good point.”
