Ollie: Let’s avoid the late shift

IAN Holloway has demanded his players do the hard work now, rather than leave it until the end of the season.

When the Seasiders were promoted from the Championship two seasons ago, they had to rely on a barnstorming end to the campaign, winning nine of their final 11 games to go up via the play-offs.

And Holloway, whose side are fifth heading into tomorrow’s teatime clash with Portsmouth, doesn’t want to leave it so late this time.

He said: “It would be another minor miracle if we could achieve the impossible for a second time and actually go up again, but that is what we are trying to do.

“All I know is that I have got a great group of lads who are playing some terrific football and who never let me down.

“We’re on a nice little run. We’ve had two great wins, and the character we showed in the previous run of matches to come from behind – including coming from two goals down at Ipswich – should give us even more encouragement.

“But we need to keep picking up three points on a regular basis now, rather than leave it until the last 10 games of the season, which we seem to have done a few times.

“It wouldn’t do much for my health if we left it that late this time, so hopefully we can carry on getting three points on a regular basis and make it easier for ourselves, so we don’t need another fantastic run towards the end.”

After those back-to-back wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff, with two very different line-ups, the boss has selection problems galore for tomorrow’s visit of Pompey, who are poised to go into administration after their latest financial crisis – they face a 10 points deduction.

Keith Southern is the only man ruled out.

Ian Evatt returns from suspension, while Roman Bednar is also eligible after missing the midweek FA Cup win at Sheffield Wednesday.
