Blackpool have been handed a massive Christmas boost after Gary MacKenzie was declared fit for the visit of Leeds.

The big defender was expected to be out of the rest of the year after injuring his hip in the defeat to Yeovil at the start of the month.

He was given an injection last week in an attempt to settle the injury down, and results have proved positive.

It means Blackpool can field four recognised defenders for the first time in weeks on Boxing Day, something manager Paul Ince says is a huge bonus.

“It’s a huge boost to have Gary back,” said Ince.

“It will make such a difference to our team to have a proper back four.

“It’s hard for Bash (Chris Basham) as he tries his heart out at right-back, but he’s not a defender.

“It’s really important to get Gary back, he’s a big player for us.”
