Substitute Tom Ince sent Blackpool top of the Championship table - despite father Paul only putting him on the bench as window dressing.

Ince, who has been suffering from a thigh injury, curled home the only goal of a 1-0 victory over Watford in the 81st minute, a quarter of an hour after coming on as a substitute at Bloomfield Road.

And manager Paul said: “(England Under-21s manager) Gareth Southgate rang me (on Friday); Tom has been out for three weeks. He asked me if Tom wanted to go down and join up with the Under-21s and train.

“But I told him I’d put him on the bench as a threat, never to play him, just for Watford to take their eye off the ball. I had no intention of playing him.”

Blackpool’s win also came on the back of Matthew Gilks’ 14th-minute penalty save from Troy Deeney, who had scored five goals in his previous four matches.

Watford boss Gianfranco Zola was left a frustrated man.

“I cannot believe we lost the game,” the stunned Italian said.

“Actually I can - it happened last season a few times. We had complete domination and then we got sloppy in the second half.”
