IAN Holloway believes young forward James Caton could be the next Tom Ince.
The 18-year-old, who was released by Bolton at the end of last season, has impressed during his trial and was offered a contract earlier this week.
The winger was initially brought in for the new development squad, although Holloway believes he could be one for the first team.
“He’s shown me already that he might be above the development squad,” Holloway admitted.
“He could be like Matt Phillips and Tom Ince in recent years, who I have to dip in and out of the first team to give him experience.
“When I first got Matt and Incey they were impact players, and James could be one of those this season.
“I’ve seen enough of him, the way he does things and the way he moves, to quite like him.
“He’s only 18 at the moment, so I’ve got two years to make him into someone like Tom Ince who’s 20.”
The youngster has played three times for Pool this pre-season so far, and scored in the 2-0 home win against Everton on Sunday.
He trained with Derby earlier this summer and is being monitored by a number of Championship clubs.
However, Holloway revealed a deal at Bloomfield Road is close.
“Hopefully he’ll get a medical sorted and things are already agreed.
“I can’t wait to work with him and see what he can achieve.”
