Gilks: We can make the top two
Matt Gilks
IF player of the season was voted for now, it would be putting it mildly to suggest that Matt Gilks would be one of the frontrunners.
Gilks has been superb, making vital saves in every game.
Everybody, including manager Ian Holloway, feared the keeper would not sign a new contract last summer and go elsewhere.
But everyone else’s loss is Blackpool’s gain, for Gilks has been outstanding ever since the opening night at Hull and, back after a five-game lay-off with a groin tear, he is excited about what can be achieved this year.
The 29-year-old said: “We talk in the dressing room and a lot of us believe we can get automatic promotion, never mind the play-offs.
“For starters, the pressure of the play-offs the other year was more than enough for a lifetime for me!
“But looking at Southampton, they seem to be on a bit of a slide and I think we will catch them.
“We have a good run of games coming up, and without wanting to sound cocky I just can’t see where we are going to get beaten.
“The quality we have is terrific, and we are learning and getting better every day. So it is all very positive and everyone has a good outlook. We are very confident.”

That said, Gilks does add a rider. “It’s all very well talking like this, but the Championship is such a strong league,” he added.
“In the Premier League, you have your top four or five that stand out; in the Championship, anybody can beat anybody.
“It all comes down to what happens on a certain day and anything can.
“One of the best teams I’ve seen this year were Peterborough, when they came to our place. I thought their passing was exceptional but they aren’t exactly flying high, so it shows how hard every game is, no matter who the opposition are.
“It is definitely a harder division than last time we were in it, which is why, for all the talent we have in our squad, we need to keep our eye on the ball and make sure we continue to pick up points on a regular basis.”
Gilks will have to earn his corn tomorrow. Cardiff have scored more goals at home than any other team in the top half of table, apart from table-toppers West Ham.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 04:07 PMThe really good thing to be drawn from the last 2 league games is that we've been rank yet have still taken 3 points. That's the sign of a good team. Bednar is the missing piece in my opinion. The difference in our play in the last 15 minutes on Tuesday was amazing when he was on the pitch. The Cov defence almost literally cacked themselves.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 03:48 PMJaffa, I can't remember ever seeing so many words with a total absence of absolutely anything positive. Come on, we're in the play offs area there must be something positive there, or even neutral, but not all negative.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 12:39 PMI think Gilks and Howard are pretty much neck and neck. Howard would have been a good signing because he would have given the squad confidence that there was a decent no 2 in the wings. I have to say I think the biggest miss of all may be the failure to not install undersoil heating. Its about to get cold, good job we're away tomorrow.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 10:32 AMCome on, maybe an outside chance of the Playoffs, but way off automatic. We've been awful last 3 games which is why I don't understand Gilks saying he can't see where we are going to get beaten. Try Cardiff tomorrow. Can't believe we never signed Howard, he was a superior Keeper. You talk about an outside chance of automatic when we don't even sign quality players that are right uner our nose. If we don't go up this season (likely) the team will be on a steady decline cause of tight Oyston. We've already declined since last year. It's such a shame. I remember when Oyston said cause we'd gone up to the premier league he was going to sort the training ground. He's full of sh1t.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 10:19 AMNothing like being positive Jaffa. I believe we have a great chance of the playoffs and an outside chance of automatic promotion. We believed 2 seasons ago and look what happened.UTMP

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 09:47 AMDoubt we'll be in the top 6 come may. It would help if Gilks could kick it out of his own half.
