Ian Evatt insists Kevin Phillips should not be blamed for missing a late chance to seal three points for Pool against Watford on Saturday.
The defender, who is part of a back four that has kept two clean sheets in three games, described Saturday’s goalless stalemate as “just one of those days”.
Substitute Phillips squandered Pool’s best chance of the game in the dying minutes but Evatt was quick to jump to the striker’s defence.
The centre-half said: “You can’t say anything about Kev’s miss.
“It’s tough to come off the bench on a cold day, especially when it’s been a while since he played 90 minutes.
“99 times out of 100 we want Kev on the end of those chances. I’m sure in the weeks ahead he’ll take them.”
Evatt thinks Pool had already created enough chances to win comfortably against Watford, adding: “We hit the post twice and missed a couple of very good chances ... just one of those days.
“We have so many goals in the team that we always think that we’ll get one.
“We’ve had chance after chance and it just wouldn’t go in for us.
“But it’s another clean sheet for us and they are always nice.
“At times against Southampton we defended really well, but Saturday’s was a well-deserved clean sheet.
“It’s our job at the back to keep the goals out and hopefully the lads up front can get us goals to win games.”
