WEMBLEY is naturally uppermost in the minds of the Blackpool FC players but they found time yesterday to promote another massive sporting occasion, and one taking place closer to home.

The Claret Jug, the iconic trophy for golf’s Open Championship, made a visit to Bloomfield Road before the world’s greatest golfers compete for it at royal Lytham and St Annes in July.

Pool manager Ian Holloway said: “I actually took the game up after my wife and I went to the ‘pitch and putt’ at St Annes. Unlike many sports, golf is something you can do together as a family, which is just great. It’s just a shame for me that my wife hits it straighter than me!”

The Open takes place from July 19-22, preceded by four practice days from the 15th, all open to the public.
