Bowyer gives Blackpool players a history test

The new manager has compiled a DVD of the Seasiders’ greatest moments.

It’s designed to inspire the players on their training camp in Scotland and Bowyer will make sure they pay attention.

“We’ll have a quiz on the club’s history while we’re up here,” the new boss said.

“I want the players to know the club they play for, so I had our video analyst put together a video on the history of the club.

“All the players have a copy to watch while we’re in Scotland. I want the players to learn it. I think it’s really important.”

Pool will play Scottish League One side Peterhead this afternoon in a behind- closed-doors friendly before returning to Blackpool over the weekend.

And Bowyer says the squad have surprised him so far. “I’ve been impressed with the ambition and hunger the players have,” he said.

“We have to grow and enhance that, and build up to the start of the season.

“It’s massively important to me that the players take ownership and responsibility for their performances.

“We are putting the players in positions where we are encouraging them to do that.”

Blackpool hope to complete their training camp with a 100 per cent match record, having beaten Dundee United 3-0 on Tuesday.

New striker Jamille Matt was relieved to score his first goal for the club on his first outing. The former Fleetwood frontman told the club website: “Getting your first goal settles you down straight away, so it’s nice to have scored as early as possible.

“There are five strikers here and everybody offers something different. It will be good to see how we all work together because we’ve got some good strong attacking options.

“Your job as a striker is to score. You can play badly for 80 minutes, but if you pop up and score a couple of goals in the other 10 nobody remembers the other stuff. If you don’t score, then next week you might not be in the team.”

Newcastle midfielder Liam Smith, who ended last season on loan at Blackpool, will spend the first half of the coming campaign at Crewe, who were relegated with Pool.
