Bednar’s bench-mark for success

Blackpool's Kevin Phillips (left) celebrates his goal with team mate Roman Bednar

ROMAN Bednar is unlikely to be fit enough to start for Pool at Cardiff – but he is ready to cause havoc from the bench, writes STEVE CANAVAN.

The striker showed what he is capable of when he came on for his debut against Coventry on Tuesday and changed the game.

And although he is still way short of peak condition, the 26-year-old is ready and willing to do a job.

Bednar said: “I have been pretty honest with the gaffer and told him I’m not fit.

“I’ve probably been too honest because I’m doing better than I thought in training, and in those last few minutes against Coventry I felt fine.

“Only games are going to get me fit, so I am ready to play whenever the manager needs me.

“I have come to this club to score goals and help Blackpool try to get promoted. I’ve only been here a short while but already I believe I made the right choice to come here.”

Assistant manager Steve Thompson stood in for Ian Holloway at the weekly press conference yesterday – Holloway is at his family home in Bath.

The Seasiders No.2 reckons Bednar will prove invaluable to the team, even if he is only half-fit.

Thompson said: “We are giving him a special fitness programme to get up to speed but he isn’t a million miles away. What he produced against Coventry was terrific because we had given him a really tough training session that morning, with neither of us expecting he would be involved (in the match).

“He is probably 80 or 85 per cent fit, but as everyone saw the other night, even at those fitness levels he is still a real handful for any defence. But there is much more to come from Roman.

“He has a smile on his face, he has told us he is enjoying it and we’ll be able to get him going. We’ve got a track record of getting players going who haven’t been used at other clubs and we think he is going to be a big player for us.”

Roman looked great when he came on whatever age he is and I look forwqard to him reeaching full fitness. Canars probably knocked some years off just like he does with himself! Roman wants to play for BFC when many others turn their back on us & that is fantastic. Ollie needs to send many players out on loan after Tuesday and strengthen the first tream with a couple of top loans - we can then reach the PL. Anyone know what happened to the unnamed player 103.9 reported had signed but was awaiting FA clearance? Or Mark Howard? UTMP

Agree wholly, 6 foot 3 tall, scores goals, powerful and can put himself about, great signing. As for fitness levels if anybody saw him in his white lycra vest getting ready to come on I'm sure most blokes would wish to be as "unfit" as him!

Finally, a big, mobile striker who knows where the net is. For the first time, we can change to a more direct game when needed. Onwards and upwards.

Bednar will be 29 in March. Good signing, could provide the inspiration we need.
