Morgan the perfect signing for go-ahead Fylde, says boss Challinor

AFC Fylde manager Dave Challinor reckons he has secured the signing of a forward-thinking player for a go-ahead club after securing the signature of David Morgan from Nuneaton Town.

The Coasters’ boss is confident that Morgan will suit his side’s style of play and help the club towards their overriding objective of promotion from Vanarama National League North and a place in the fifth tier of English football at the season’s end.

Challinor said: “David is technically good and the important thing from my point of view is that he is looking to go forward the whole time rather than sideways or backwards.

“He has the potential to get better and play at a higher level and, eventually, the Football League.”

Morgan had turned down the offer of a new contract at his former club and AFC Fylde beat off competition from National League clubs to nail the deal.

Next up for the Coasters is a trip to Harrogate town as Fylde look to retain – or even extend – their 10-point lead at the top of the table.

The Coasters got a boost earlier in the week when one of their rivals, Kidderminster Harriers, played one of their games in hand on Fylde but failed to make up any ground as they lost 2-0 at Brackley Town.

Kiddie are now in third place, with only one match in hand on Fylde.

Second-placed Salford City are 10 points adrift, having played the same number of matches as Challinor’s men.

Challinor said: “We played well to beat Tamworth last Saturday, particularly in the second half.

“We hope to use that and the fact that Kidderminster lost in midweek as motivation in our match with Harrogate, which we know will be a tough place to go.”

Fylde’s confidence was further buoyed this week when they played a behind-closed-doors friendly match at Chester.

They beat a National League team containing seven first-teamers by 3-1.

The most important aspect of the match was that Sam Finley, sidelined for so long though illness, got in an hour’s football.

Prior to the trip to Harrogate, the Coasters will give fitness tests to a couple of players.

Steve Williams was not able to train in the early part of the week because of hamstring trouble.

Similarly, Dan Bradley has been nursing a knee injury.
