Fleetwood Town wing the changes
FLEETWOOD Town FC have raced out of the blocks to snap up a second speedy winger, with the promise of more signings to come as the club bids to mount a Blue Square North promotion challenge in 2009-10.
Town have moved quickly to sign out-of-contract 21-year-old Jamie Mullan from Northwich Victoria.
The swoop for Mullan follows last week's signing of fellow winger Lee Dodgson from Lancaster City.
Nottingham-born Mullan is a graduate of the academy ranks at Manchester United and featured regularly for the reserves at Old Trafford.
He joined Rochdale but made no senior appearances there before moving on to Northwich in January last year.
Voted Young Player of the Year in his debut campaign, Mullan went on to make over 30 Blue Square Premier appearances last term.
The Cheshire club, managed by former Seasider Andy Preece, have been hit by financial problems and were relegated at the end of the season.
Mullan says his style of play will appeal to the Highbury crowd.
"I like to run at my opponents like an old-fashioned winger." he said. "I look forward to setting up a few goals and getting the crowd excite at Fleetwood.
"I was with Manchester United from their under-14s through to under-18s and the coaching there has given me a really good background.
"I want to bring that experience to Fleetwood and use it to help us push on towards the Blue Square Premier."
Former Morecambe, Kendal Town and Forest Green Rovers wideman Dodgson scored 18 goals for Lancaster last term in the Unibond.
Manager Micky Mellon said: "I've known Lee since I was at Lancaster myself. He's played at our level, and the level above, and to score so many goals from the wing shows he's a handy lad to have around. He's talented and will make us a better a better team."
Chairman Andy Pilley said the Mullan signing is just the start of a hectic close-season for himself and manager Micky Mellon.
Pilley said: "It's very important we recruit the right players and really have a go at promotion next season.
"We have a shortlist of players and we are not afraid to go after them. This club is committed to progressing.
"The new fourth stand has been discussed in detail just this week. We are not going to build new stands unless the team matches our ambitions. That means we'll go for the right players, and if that means spending big, then we will."
Mellon is understood to have a further four new signings in his sights.
