A LAYTON martial arts club is putting up a great fight in its bid for glory.
The team representing the Sukata Mixed Martial Arts Club excelled at the North West Open Brazilian Jiujitsu Championships, winning eight gold, three silver and three bronze medals against teams from all over the country.
What made the medal haul extra-special for Sukata MMA, which is based at Oxygene Gym on Mowbray Drive, is that the championships were staged close to home, in Thornton.
They academy, which launched in November 2008, is named after Mario Sukata, who has fought in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and is a multiple world and European champion .
Sukata Blackpool has produced a British MMA champion and countless Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ) champions.
Head coach Gary Savage was recently awarded his BJJ black belt from Mario Sukata. He is among the first martial artists in England to achieve the grade and the only BJJ black belt in Blackpool.
Gary is a two-time European BJJ champion and a former North of England jujitsu Kumite champion.
Gary said: “The Sukata team competes all over the country and has been very successful. They have won at recent MMA competitions too, fighting in shows in Preston, Shropshire and Sunderland.”
Sukata is enrolling new students, who are invited to visit www.martialartsblackpool.co.uk or call 07843 091829 for more details. They are also developing a children’s section, more details of which will appear in tomorrow’s AllStars.
