Euell strikes to sink Ipswich

JASON Euell stepped back into the starting line up and scored the goal which boosted Pool's play-off hopes.

Euell struck a second half winner, volleying in at the back post after Charlie Adam's long throw took a deflection off Gareth McAuley.

It was enough to give the Seasiders a crucial three points but they have much to thanks keeper Matt Gilks for.

He made five splendid saves, the pick a brilliant fingertip stop from David Healy's glancing header.

It was a goalless stalemate at the interval. With both teams struggling on the poor playing surface, Pool started brightly and put together some decent moves.

But Charlie Adam had the only shot on target, forcing Ipswich keeper Brian Murphy to tip his shot from 30 yards around the post.

The visitors missed a golden opportunity early on when Carlos Edwards' cross caught the defence napping and striker Daryl Murphy miskicked with the goal at his mercy.

Gilks was forced to made a sharp save eight minutes before the break, blocking Jamie Peters powerful shot from the edge of the area.

He then made an even better stop on the stroke of half time, when David Norris seemed set to score from inside the area.

Ipswich were arguably the better side over the course of the half, the Seasiders fading slightly after their lively beginning.

But the Tangerines were much better in the second period and Euell pounced to put them ahead on 53 minutes.

Billy Clarke came off the bench and almost scored twice against his former employees.

But it was Ipswich who hit back strongly towards and Gilks was called into action on several occasions.

In the end though Pool just about held out and bounced back from their disappointing defeat at Barnsley last time out.

Roy Keane's team had twice beaten the Seasiders already this campaign, in the league at Portman Road and the FA Cup at Bloomfield Road.

Ian Holloway wanted to redress the balance, and did, but he was forced to select a very different team.

With Ian Evatt and Stephen Crainey out, Joe Martin came in at left back for only his second league start of the campaign. His first was at Cardiff in January.

Alex Baptiste moved to centre half with Neal Eardley in at right back – his first start since being disciplined for a night out.

Euell and Dobbie joined DJ Campbell up front. Adam and David Vaughan started in midfield, despite being on international duty during the week.

Ipswich made one change from the side which drew against Bristol City last weekend, Peters in for Healy.
