Chasing a stiff 349 target, Lancashire had dipped to 121 for five at lunch with Karl Brown on 25 and Liam Livingstone (10) at the crease.

The floodlights were already on when Lancashire started out and not long afterwards Yorkshire turned to an all-spin attack after a discussion with the umpires.

It led to the boost the White Rose wanted because Haseeb Hameed was caught behind cutting at Adil Rashid and in the next over Luke Procter aimed a big drive at Adam Lyth and edged to Alex Lees at slip.

That left Lancashire on 55 for three and Rashid would have struck again if Lees had been able to hold on to Croft’s cut to first slip, Lyth being unable to reach the rebound.

At 71 for three the light improved sufficiently for the pacemen to return and Tim Bresnan immediately dismissed Croft who attempted to withdraw his bat but played into his stumps.

Yorkshire continued to hold the upper hand and they claimed the prize wicket of Alviro Petersen when he played across the line at Bresnan and was lbw for 24, Lancashire having slumped to 99 for five.
