Canavan's blog: Time to stick together

AT least everyone knows where they stand now. Sort of.

Tony Parkes and Steve Thompson have the Blackpool job for the foreseeable future, until the end of the season, hopes chairman Karl Oyston.

That's great news. We know who's in charge now.

Of course there is always a 'but' and in this case it's what will happen should Pool lose a few more and slip into serious relegation trouble? Will the chairman and Valery Belokon still stand by them?

They, and we, hope it doesn't come to that.

Oyston has gone to great lengths to ask fans and the media to concentrate on events on the pitch and unite behind Pool's attempts to stay in the Championship.

And he is talking sense.

There can be no infighting. Everyone must be focused on one common aim. There needs to be complete support for Parkes and Thompson.

With huge, huge home games against Burnley and Norwich, now is the time to hold one's nerve and hope that points will be forthcoming.

At least Saturday at Bristol gave us renewed hope.

The fickle world of football has moved on again. Gone are the memories of the Derby and Watford games, replaced by images of heroic defending in earning a superb and valuable point at Ashton Gate.

Shaun Barker was immense and must now surely stay at centre back. Right back belongs to someone else. A straight battle between Alex Baptiste and Danny Coid. The latter was brilliant in Bristol, one of those players who no matter how frantic the game, always has time on the ball. If he stays injury-free, he may yet have the career he deserves.

Paul Rachubka proved a point, performing with consistency and command.

He'll disagree, but a spell out of the side may have done him good.

Charlie Adam at last provided the presence so badly missing from the central midfield in recent weeks. He could be the key player in the weeks to come.

An allround fine performance. Now we need maximum points from at least one of the next two games.
