Canavan's blog: The Richie Wellens show

ON the bright side at least this game was better than the reverse fixture at Doncaster.

Tony Parkes and Steve Thompson though would have probably preferred a terribly dull 0-0 draw to this cracker which left Pool empty-handed.

It was a terrific game, five goals, a red card and enough talking points to keep Alan Hansen busy for weeks.

What made it even more galling for Pool was that the man who orchestrated their downfall was a former employee.

Richie Wellens is a bloke opposition fans love to hate because he's good at winding other players up – and Charlie Adam fell for it.

Adam, who is a Scottish international and has played in big Europe games and Old Firm derbies should really have known better.

At the point he departed, Pool were a goal behind and struggling slightly. If they'd retained a full complement it is open to debate whether or not they'd have nicked a draw – but they'd have had a better chance.

Doncaster looked a decent side, and had a touch of the Swansea about them, although they are not as strong, particularly at the back.

Pool could and should have won, and probably would have done had David Fox's 25th minute chance been taken.

But it's wrong to blame Fox too much. Let's not forget the keeper made a good save.

The defence was much shakier than at Palace. Parkes got it spot on when he said that Pool leave holes when they play at home because they're forced to take the game to the opposition.

However, Alex Baptiste had another good game and is proving a very capable right back.

DJ Campbell continues to excel. He is a nightmare for defenders and, as long as he stays fit, he will fire the goals to keep the club in the division – for Dickov last season, read DJ this.

Next two games – trips to Ipswich and Derby – sound tough and they are. But Pool are perhaps better suited to playing away.
