Canavan's blog: The force was with you

OF Blackpool's magnificent travelling support – more than 1,100 at Oakwell (by comparison Fulham took 180 fans to Bolton) – a handful caught the eye.

They were dressed as Star Wars characters – we had Stormtroopers, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, the lot, which must have been a shock for Wade Small, as he jumped into the away end to celebrate his goal only to find himself eye to eye with Darth Vader.

The Star Wars gang were Dave Hart and his family, huge Blackpool fans in fancy dress to celebrate a stag do.

Chances are they enjoyed themselves for these three points left every Seasider jumping for joy.

It didn't matter a jot that Pool didn't play particularly well.

How many times do we hear managers speaking dreamily of that game where there side plays pretty averagely and yet comes away with a 1-0 win? No wonder Tony Parkes looked so happy – that's exactly what happened here.

Small or not, Wade's signing proved a masterstroke as the new boy provided a quite brilliant finish.

Like everyone else, Small didn't have an outstanding game. But he worked hard for 90 minutes and when 11 players do that, there is always a chance of sneaking a win.

Shaun Barker and Alex Baptiste were particularly impressive in defence, while Rob Edwards did well to get straight up to pace after he was thrown on in the early stages following yet another injury for Danny Coid.

The result was a hammerblow for Barnsley, who looked like relegation candidates.

But at a venue where Birmingham had been held to a draw in midweek, Pool emerged with three points that really does put them in a terrific position regards staying up.

If they throw it away now and fail to the required 52 or 53 points, they will have only themselves to blame.

Keep battling like this though, and they will have nothing to worry about.
