Canavan's blog: Roll of dishonour 2004-5

RESEARCHING a story about past Pool signings this week, I looked at the players brought in during the 2004-05 campaign.

To say it was – how can I put this? – an underwhelming season in terms of the quality of signings is putting it mildly.

I give you, in no particular order, Steve Boyack (Scottish striker – one sub appearance in a 2-0 defeat at Torquay); Zarko Grabovac (set up a Peter Clarke goal, won a throw in, that's about it); Dean Gorre (signed on loan, came on once as a sub); Matt Shaw (nice lad, not a league footballer) and, finally, Sasa Illic (signed as No.1 keeper to replace Lee Jones – threw the ball into his own net on debut at Doncaster, earning the monicker 'Sasa Spillic' – and disappeared into oblivion).

Certainly a season to remember!.

- WHO says footballers don't care about the outcome of a game.

Richie Wellens does, though admittedly in not quite the way you might be thinking.

As the Sky TV cameras zoomed in on Dimitar Berbatov's celebrations following the striker's late, match-clinching goal against Chelsea at the weekend, there was a familiar figure jumping up and down three rows from the pitch, punching the air and hugging his mates.

Step forward Doncaster and former Seasiders midfielder Mr Wellens.

Shows he has no hard feelings after quitting United after a lack of chances at Old Trafford to join Pool in 2000.

- COUPLE of Coventry links ahead of tomorrow's game.

The Sky Blues paid big money to sign the currently crocked Stephen McPhee when he was just a 16-year-old nipper.

And Daniel Nardiello's father, Donato, a winger, played for the Midlanders for three years in the late 70s.

Gosh, this column is a hotbed of educational excitement.

Who was Pool's biggest ever flop? Leave your thoughts below.
