Canavan's blog: Pool were abysmal

STUART Green and, to a lesser extent, Daniel Nardiello have taken a lot of stick but much of it isn't really justified.

How can you seriously expect two players who have barely featured all season suddenly to step up and turn in world-beating performances?

The pair were no worse than anyone else and while Nardiello was understandably quiet, Green did provide a few decent moments.

In an ideal world the duo would have been given more training sessions and a few reserve games, then a couple of run-outs from the bench before being thrown back in.

But it is far from an ideal world at the moment and, because of the exodus of loan players, coupled with injuries and suspensions, they had to play from the start.

>> Parkes: We need new blood

There's no getting away from it though. This was one of the bleaker afternoons in the club's history. Pool were spectacularly abysmal.

The plus points? Not many but there was a dream-like moment for Dominic Merella, who will always remember his first team debut, if perhaps not for the scoreline.

Also the inclusion of Stephen Crainey on the bench – what a boost to have him close to a return.

But that's about all there was to smile about and the next week is now huge, the biggest seven days of the season.

Parkes and Thompson have to phone every number in their contacts books and ensure they get players in.

If they don't, Birmingham won't have too many sleepless nights ahead of next Saturday's encounter.

New blood is required. If the management duo can match Simon Grayson in the transfer market when it comes to spotting and signing a good player, they can turn it around.

If they don't there could be a couple of very long months ahead.

This is one defeat only and it's important not to lose a sense of perspective. But no one can deny that Pool are thin on the ground.

They need new players and fast.
