Canavan's blog: Football's a cruel game

A BIT cruel was Tony Parkes's verdict and it's hard to disagree.

Those fans who stayed home last night will look at a horribly stark scoreline and think Blackpool got battered.

It really wasn't the case.

Two goals in the final three minutes gave the wrong impression and Blackpool may even have won had they scored at the start of the second half when the match was evenly poised at 1-1.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher, DJ Campbell, Roy O'Donovan and David Fox all had decent opportunities. None went in, and after player of the night – by some distance – Kris Commons had scored a wonder goal, Pool pushed forward, left gaps and paid a heavy price.

Parkes is worried that it has hurt the goal difference column and he's right. That's 10 conceded against Derby, Doncaster and QPR.

But it really shouldn't go down to goal difference, Pool still have enough to make it to safety. Last night's game really could have gone either way until Commons' moment of magic.

There weren't any real stand-out performers. Iit was a performance full of hard work and toil rather than skill and entertainment.

The only difference was that Ipswich didn't possess a Commons.

Rob Edwards had an odd night. He scored his second goal for the club but got done by Commons for the second goal and inadvertently got the last touch on the fourth.

Stephen Crainey was at fault for the opener. He's still finding his way back, though, and is bound to take time to find his touch.

DJ Campbell was worryingly quiet and probably mighty frustrated at a lack of chances. He needs another goal.

This was Derby's third victory on the trot and the first time they have recorded three successive wins for two years. They look destined for mid-table safety.

For Pool it's less clear cut. They should get safe but three points against Watford on Saturday would make everyone feel a whole lot more confident on that front.
