Kirkham Amateur Boxing Club closed 2011 in style in a show at Great Birchwood, Warton.

Scott Horsfield looked impressive in only his second amateur fight against Callum O’Hamlin, from Dovecot ABC, although it wasn’t all plain sailing.

Horsfield got clipped in the first round after spinning his opponent to avoid a left hook – his legs were off balance and the shot landed clean on Horsfield’s chin, sending him crashing to the canvas.

O’Hamlin thought he had secured an impressive stoppage victory and would have been disappointed when Horsfield got straight up in anticipation of the eight count and produced a tremendous display of boxing, administrating an eight count to O’Hamlin in the second to win the fight on a majority decision.

Cameron Singer beat Ruben Pritchard, of JR’s Gym in Preston. Singer had too much quality for the less experienced Pritchard and secured the fight comfortably on points.

In the penultimate fight of the evening, popular Kirkham Senior Shaun Connors beat Adam Hughes of Towerhill ABC,

Connors didn’t give Hughes a moment to breathe, his high-tempo pressure-fighting style ensured he was only inches away from Hughes all fight and comfortably scored a unanimous points verdict.

Kirkham ABC’s newly-crowned super-heavyweight champion Bill Hodgson ensured he kept up the momentum by disposing of John Winters, of Towerhill ABC, inside the first round.

Winters, a former Marine was a tough opponent for Hodgson, but once the Kirkham man cornered him against the ropes and unloaded with body shots the fight was as good as over, Winters got up to make the eight count and seconds later found himself on the floor again, four body shots finished off with a sweet right hook sent him back to the canvas.

Showing the grit and determination expected from a marine, he got up again ready to fight but a flurry of body shots sent him crashing to the ground for a third time, forcing the referee to stop the contest.

Hodgson is fast gathering a reputation on the amateur boxing circuit – he stopped the last five out of six opponents inside the distance through his explosive punching.

Kirkham’s Josh Brady lost his second contest on points to Tom Dale, of Dovecot ABC, and Grant Stratford was defeated by Uwais Majid of Roche ABC.

Junior Kyle Fuller lost on points to Mike Day of Larches ABC in Preston.

Vinnie Whyte lost to Naeem Ashaq, of Keighley ABC.
