Ricky Hatton has backed boxer Brian Rose to upset the odds and bring the world title back to Blackpool in exactly one month’s time.

The 35-year-old ‘Hitman’ from Stockport, who won world titles at light-welterweight and welterweight in his 48-fight career, is no stranger to going into battle on the other side of the Atlantic.

And Hatton sees no reason why Rose can’t beat WBO light-middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade in New York a month tonight.

Hatton, now a promoter who has staged fights at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, said: “Brian can do it. He has improved massively since coming back from a horrendous knockout by Max Maxwell.

“Brian has never looked back from that – he’s just got better and better.

“He goes over there as an underdog and he is up against it a bit. But there was a young Mancunian called Ricky Hatton who was once up against it and proved everyone wrong.

“Brian needs to go over there and believe in himself. If he does that, upsets can happen.

“Brian has the type of ability that if he gets into Andrade quickly and starts well, there’s no reason why he can’t win.”

Rose is considered a huge underdog for the June 14 clash with a WBO titleholder who has won all of his 20 fights so far.

The Blackpool fighter jets across the Atlantic at the end of the month for his first fight outside the UK. But Hatton, a veteran of title fights in Las Vegas, says the location makes no difference at all.

He said: “He and Bobby (coach Bobby Rimmer) will have tactics and Brian has to stick to them.

“At the end of the day a ring is a ring. It doesn’t make any difference where it is.

“Brian has a lot of experience now and he’s not shy of a challenge. I think he’ll cope with it really well.

“It doesn’t matter about the crowd and it doesn’t matter where the ring is.

“It’s just you and him in there, and if Brian looks at it that way he won’t go far wrong.”
