Champ Rose homes in on revenge battle

BRITISH light-middleweight champion Brian Rose intends to avenge the only defeat on his record when he takes on Max Maxwell in the first defence of his title at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on March 31.

Rose was stopped by Maxwell in the sixth round when the pair last met, a crushing setback for the Blackpool boxer.

But it is the burning desire to put the record straight that persuaded Rose to face the Midlander again in a voluntary defence of the title he won from Prince Arron in December.

Rose said: “Maxwell has always said he wants to fight me again, for the title this time.

“I chose to defend against Maxwell because he is the only fighter to beat met.”

Their last meeting was at Huddersfield Leisure Centre in May 2010.

Rose says he was not properly prepared mentally for that contest, coming seven months after the mental turmoil of his win over Jason Rushton for the Central Area title.

Rushton had to be placed in an induced coma after Rose had beaten him.

Rose said: “I said that if I didn’t beat Prince Arron to win the British title I would quit boxing, and I meant that. I am just as determined – more so – for this fight with Maxwell.

“I know exactly what Maxwell is going to do. He will try and rough me up with every trick in the book, but I am confident I will put the record straight.

“I am bringing big-time boxing back to Blackpool, I am top of the bill in my own town and I will put on a show for the fans.”

Rose is now in full training for the contest, having won the Lonsdale Belt with his win over Arron at Robin Park, Wigan, where he became the first fighter from Blackpool to win a British title since Brian London over 50 years previously.

Tickets for the Rose versus Maxwell clash are available at FX Leisure (tel: 891888).
