Cardle upset at title defence delay

Lytham boxer Scott Cardle is growing increasingly frustrated at being unable to nominate an opponent for his British lightweight title defence in Glasgow next month.

It will be a voluntary defence and a win would secure him outright possession of the Lonsdale Belt.

However, none of the fighters put forward by Team Cardle have found favour as yet with the British Boxing Board Of Control.

Cardle said: “We keep putting names forward to the Board and they keep knocking them back as not suitable for whatever reason and it is upsetting.

“Being voluntary, it should be my choice and we have put forward names that have a good British ranking and so on and we don’t really know why.

“It is very frustrating because the show is on April 15 in Glasgow and there is not that much time now.

“Hopefully, I may know more by the end of the week.”

One name that could be in the mix is Yorkshire’s Robbie Barrett, who won the English title as recently as Saturday at the Doncaster Dome.

Barrett beat Kevin Hooper on points; Grimsby boxer Hooper was soundly beaten by Cardle in the latest defence of the title by the unbeaten Lytham boxer.
