Boxer Scott a hero to the homeless

When you are warm and settled in your favourite armchair in front of the fire at 10 o'clock on Saturday night, you may wish to spare a thought - and a pound or two or more - for British lightweight champion Scott Cardle.

He will be out in the open, sleeping rough and desperately trying to stave off the November cold for all of eight hours.

But don’t run away with the idea that the Lytham boxer is suddenly down on his luck - far from it.

The big-hearted boxer is enduring such privations voluntarily.

He is taking part in what is known as the annual ‘Celtic Sleep Out’ at Parkhead, home of the giants of Scottish football.

It is part of the Celtic foundation’s Christmas appeal to help and highlight the plight of the homeless.

It’s a cause close to Cardle’s heart - he will be one of scores camping out for the night around the Celtic Park pitch, braving the elements - dad Joe will be there too as well as Cardle’s girl-friend Carly Firth.

In all some 200 people will be joining in this highly commendable charity venture in Glasgow.

Scott said: “In one way I am looking forward to it - and in another way I am dreading it!

“I was going to go to Monte Carlo to watch my mate Stephen Smith fight for the world super-featherweight, but I have decided to spend the night out in the cold from 10pm to 6am instead to try and raise money for the homeless.

“It has always been a cause that has been close to my heart.

“When you see someone sleeping rough in the street, it is very hard to walk past.”

Scott ha also helped the homeless nearer at hand in a practical way.

Without seeking any publicity, he has served at Blackpool food banks, along with girl-friend Carly. She is a trained hair-dresser and has cut the hair of some of the homeless.

All and all it’s a knockout gesture by the Cardle clan.
